ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend school every day and to arrive on time for class. State law recognizes only illness, medical appointments, quarantine and attendance at a funeral of a close relative as excused absences; all other reasons are considered unexcused.
The office must be notified if your student will not be attending school, whether for the full day or part of the day. Notification methods: email eganattendance@lasdschools.org or call the school’s attendance number 650-917-2255 before 8:00am to report the absences each day. You must also notify the office if your student will be late to school.
When notifying the school, include the following information:
If you have not notified the office by 2:00pm, you will receive an automated phone call and email notifying you of your student’s absence. The period/s is/are stated in the message – period 8 refers to Advisory. Please notify the office within 24 hours of receiving the message, otherwise the attendance will be marked with an unexcused absence, regardless of the reason.
Please note that notifying a teacher does not necessarily mean the message will be passed on to the office. Ideally, you should send an email to the affected teacher(s) and copy eganattendance@lasdschools.org so that all necessary people are notified.
Class participation is integral to students’ learning. You are encouraged to schedule medical appointments during non-school hours. Students will be expected to make up work missed when absent. Students must attend at least 4 periods of the school day (and not go home ill) in order to participate in extracurricular or after school activities. When a student has had 5 consecutive absences or 14 total in the school year for illness, the school may request information from the student’s physician.
If your student needs to leave school early, please write a note and ask your student to bring it to the office before school. The office staff will give them an Appointment slip which will allow them to leave class at the required time. You can pick them up at the office where you will sign them out.
Chronic absences can be detrimental to a student’s learning. A student is considered truant after missing 3 full days during the school year without a valid excuse. A letter will be mailed home and the student may be referred to a student success team to assist in evaluating his/her needs and identifying strategies and programs to assist him/her.
TAKING TRIPS AND LONGER ABSENCES
If your student will be absent 5-15 consecutive days for reasons other than illness (such as a family trip) you may request an Independent Study Plan. Contact the office 2 weeks prior to leaving on the trip to complete and sign the Independent Study Plan (ISP) form. Each teacher will assign work to complete during the absence. The form and completed assignments must be turned into the office before school starts on the day returning to school. All work assigned MUST be completed by the day of your return. If the student is ill on the return date, the work must still be submitted that day. Once the teachers review the completed work, they will assign a Pass or No Pass designation for each class for the ISP. If all classes receive a Pass then the student will receive attendance credit for being in school during that time. If any classes receive a No Pass, then only some of the days will receive attendance credit.
